Discover the Missouri Institute of Natural Science

The Missouri Institute of Natural Science, Springfield, MO, is a museum and research facility in the Greater Springfield area.

The institute was established in 2003, after a significant discovery was made in a previously unknown cave system, which came to be known as Riverbluff Cave. It was primarily created to educate the public on ways to preserve and protect the cave and the fossils, minerals, artifacts, and modern biological samples in the collection and to serve as a venue for meetings and educational activities. In 2009, Missouri’s first natural history museum opened. It houses many prehistoric creatures and artifacts, including dinosaurs and fossilized bacteria colonies, among others. The museum is open to the public Monday through Saturday, with free admission. As a non-profit facility, the institute relies on volunteer staff for daily operations. Their dedication allows it to continue its research and educational efforts. If you want to explore the real estate market within the area, send us a message today.

INSTITUTE EXHIBIT: The Missouri Institute of Natural Science is a must-visit location for fossils and specimens. The museum boasts an impressive collection of prehistoric samples. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing ancient sea creatures, prehistoric mammals, and dinosaurs. One of the most notable specimens on display at the museum is Henry the Triceratops, a dinosaur skeleton discovered in Weston County, Wyoming. The institute also features an on-site lab which allows resident researchers to expand their knowledge in various fields. Research and preservation are ongoing for the specimens and artifacts housed in the museum.

FOSSIL HUNT: MINS offers visitors a unique opportunity to hunt for fossils in a guided tour that allows them to learn about the prehistoric life that inhabited the area and then explore the fossil-rich land on their own. Volunteers are on-site to distribute baggies for fossil collection. They’ll also be accessible in case of emergencies. Equipment is not allowed in the area. Hunters are only allowed to collect fossils that are already loose. This activity can also be part of field trips or birthday parties.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS: The Missouri Institute of Natural Science hosts several community events. These activities aim to support its preservation efforts. Among these events are the Raptor Run and the Dino Camp. The Raptor Run is a fundraiser where participants can run or walk a 5K or a 1-mile Fun Run. The exciting event supports the museum and aids in continued research within Riverbluff Cave. The Dino Camp is a summer camp for children. It offers educational experiences about natural history and the ecosystem of Missouri. Both events contribute to the Missouri Institute of Natural Science‘s mission. It helps them explore prehistory, geology, and the natural world.
